Rest in Peace Tom

Picture
We lost a very special member of our society this past weekend.  Tom, was everyone's friend.  He always had a joke to tell and spent countless hours educating anyone that would listen on how to grow Dahlias.  Beside his wife and family Dahlias were his passion.  He has won countless awards for his beautiful and so close to perfect blooms, year after year.  Job well done Tom, Rest in Peace!

If your out and about and want to enjoy a walk in the park, stop out to the Webster arboretum and visit our Dahlia bed out there.

Hi everyone,
First of the care team at the arboretum this morning tied, weeded and watered our dahlias. Everything is looking great and growing . Thanks to Lurine Gotta ,Janet Zimmerman, and yours truly Joe. We even have a new be called Toe Ma Toe in the group, thanks to Ginger. Not one Dahlia looks sad.

Congratulations Margaret on your 96th Birthday!
Congratulations to one of our founding Members who turned 96 this year on May 18th.  Margaret McMaster has been instrumental in keeping our club alive for more than 80 years.  At one point in our history the club had gotten so small that Margaret was holding the meeting for the handful of members in her home. We are now a very strong club with over 80 members.  Much of that can be attributed to a few dedicated individuals like Margaret.

August and September are show and garden tour time for dahlia growers. Ginger and Jeff’s garden was beautiful, and Mary presented Bill with his certificate for becoming a candidate judge. RDS members visited our dahlias at the Webster Arboretum, then went to Liz and Tom’s garden, shown below.

I wanted to a take a moment and Thank each and every one for all the hard work on Saturday! We really had a wonderful day!

Our final numbers are that we potted 750 tubers and have 111 varieties! Everyone should be proud! We all did a GREAT job!

I'm getting calls from people who would like to donate more tubers to the sale. We will definitely be over 800 by the time we head for the sales.

Thank you again for all who gave up space in their homes for fostering plants! Thank you for the wonderful refreshments! We had yummy treats to keep us going!

Please think about helping out at the sales. If you are interested please let me know. Thank you very much!!

Thank you again!

Sincerely,
Patti Pirz
Rochester Dahlia Society - President

We had 41 members working in an assembly line.  We potted about 750 tubers to be sold at the May sales.

Monroe County Fair 2018

On Friday, August 3 - A dozen dahlia enthusiasts gathered at the new site for the Monroe County Fair. We put together a small show, and judged our own entries. This was a good warm-up for larger shows to come this summer. Judges brushed up on their skills and we enjoyed each other’s company as well as the flowers.

Our RDS judges narrowed the "Best Dahlia" down to five and the general flower chair picked two winners instead of one. Tom had "Javier" and Al had "Fancy Pants". Carol was another big winner, but hers was not picked this time.  Below are a couple of pictures from the fair.

Here Comes the Judge, Here Comes the Judge!

Congratulations to Al Cocco on his new Judgeship!

At our February RDS meeting Mary Feasel, Senior ADS Judge, presented Al Cocco with a certificate from the American Dahlia Society.  Al has advanced from Candidate Judge to Accredited Judge.  Congratulations, Al!
